Tropical Tasmania

“It’s the fish I feel sorry for, in all this global warming. They don’t even have a carbon footprint.”

J.L. Merrow

A lovely tropical paradise type of day on Bruny Island to celebrate 26 years of marriage on the 26th.  The bay we chose was warm, clean, bright and very very uncrowded.  Not bad for a pittance for the return ferry ride, pack your own picnic or indeed enjoy the local fare.

Here is one fair maiden making her way along the beach...

There were some great sights along the way.  All up what a great way to mark a special occasion - thanks Bruny Island <again>.

Funny little fellas scurrying everywhere!

Keep baby, throw out bath water

"We can't act if we can't think and, in my opinion, we can't think if we don't read."
Jennifer Byrne
Teachers are usually the last people to be consulted about educational issues - imagine redrawing legal boundaries every few years without the input of lawyers, or changing medical procedures without the influence of doctors, and you may see the problem with having “experts” outside of education set policy.
Teachers also are also easy targets when Australia slips (again) in international rankings.  Politicians of all persuasions are particularly reactive in this area, but rarely proactive and certainly not consultative. So it’s 2017 and how do you best prepare your child for the new educational year?  According to one article the key to success is the right mobile phone…

Yep because that’s how you improve concentration and depth of knowledge.  The child can’t develop and build a phone, they can't program a phone or fix a phone, but some of us are pretty sure installing apps is the key to the country’s future! As an alternative to this appalling and dangerous advice, here is another way of preparing your child for 2017.

As for the latest mobile phone?  Expensive, needless, damaging and pandering to the worst excess of consumerism.  Indulge yourself in FOMO if you must, but be a parent to your child.

Jamming with the cherries

All I do is keep on running in my own cozy, homemade void, my own nostalgic silence. And this is a pretty wonderful thing. No matter what anybody else says.
Haruki Murakami

It's jam season!  There is nothing better in the middle of winter than to taste summer via a jar of homemade jam.  With a little patient care a bucket of cherries can be turned into months of mouth-watering pleasure.  We also made BSR jam (Boysenberry, Strawberry and Raspberry) from our own garden, but the cherries were picked from a local orchard.  Thanks Summer Fruit!

New vs Old

To get back one's youth one has merely to repeat one's follies.

Tiny tiny light

While it may seem small, the ripple effects of small things is extraordinary.
Matt Bevin

The heady mix of online shopping and late night red wine can make for some interesting effects.  How does one in this calamitous mix tell apart the following items: attiny85-20pu and attiny85-20su?

Well, when they arrive you tell them apart by their size; the pu version is ridiculously small and the su version is ludicrously small (almost plaid)!

Here it is in visual form:

good save?
So now that the thing is wired up into something that can be seen with the naked eye, it's time to put them to good use - fake candle on the left and night light (prototype version) on the right.

Not everyone loves electrickery so here is the obligatory puppy picture!

Cheers from Tas and happy new year!
